The three year degree programme in English Language and English Literature is designed to prepare students to understand and use the English language effectively to build vocabulary and creating an aesthetic sense in them. It also provides students an overview of the literature of all periods( Anglo Saxon to Modern), together with opportunities to specialise in particular area of literature and helps to study different texts and authors from an exceptionally wide range of English, British, Indian and American literatures and the most important genres in English literature. These will range from the classical genres of poetry, prose and drama to the more recent developments in literary theory and media.
The course helps to develop in students an independent, critical and reflective approach to learning, which helps them to mould their critical thinking and reasoning skills. English, Queen of languages is a critical element in our society now a days. One who is familiar with this languages awaits vast opportunities in different fields .
The course covers many aspects of English Language and Literature: how it has developed from Old English period (Anglo-Saxon ) to become a world language; its impact on the digital age; how it is acquired, learnt and taught; how it varies according to different users, situations and purpose; etc . A distinctive feature is that the course concentrates on the acquisition of skills in grammar, phonetics, language in society, the media and criticism. These skills are essential to sharpen their future.

Graduates can select a wide variety of careers such as Graduate Professions in Local Government and Public Services, Marketing, Law, Teaching, Journalism, Publishing, Theatre arts, Administration, Advertising, Finance etc. Opportunities also exist in national and international levels.
Eligibility for admission
A Pass in Higher Secondary Examination or VHSE with any subject combination or any other examination recognized by the University of Kerala with a minimum of 45% marks in aggregate.
